Bulgarians love their meat, but it’s definitely not impossable to find vegetarian dishes and nice options for vegetarians and even vegans in Bulgaria. Especially in Sofia there are a bunch of restaurants with delicious vegetarian food! In this article I’ll share 7 vegetarian hotspots in Sofia that you want to try out.

Last update & prices in the article are from May 2025.

7 Vegetarian Hotspots In Sofia

1. Cute Coffee Place: Barista Coffee And More

A place where I often come back when I’m in Sofia is Barista Coffee and More. This coffee place has a convenient location in between the Central Bus Station and Serdika. I love the vibes in here, but another big plus is that they are open early (for Sofia – somehow people in Sofia don’t need coffee at 8am haha). So it’s a great place when I’m early in Sofia and have a few hours to kill.

It’s a decent place to work remote as well; they are laptop friendly and the WiFi is good. There is relaxed music on, so I wouldn’t do calls here (but I wouldn’t do that in any coffee place to be fair). You can sit inside and outside.

The coffee is always good and there are many options; if you’re a coffee lover I recommend you to bring some of their speciality coffees home. They also have some delicious treats like croissants and sandwiches, most of them vegetarian friendly. I usually don’t like it to combine croissants with anything else, but the one with blue cheese and figs is one of my favourites.

Prices: croissants with fillings are about 4 leva (€2) and sandwiches are 6-7 leva (€3-3,5). For aeropress coffee you pay 4,60 leva (€2,30), some other specialty coffees are 6 leva (€3).

Address: Ulica Bacho Kiro 26-30 (and nowadays they have a second location at Boulevard James Bourchier 91)

2. More Coffee: Altruist – Urban Coffee Shop & Bakery

Altruist is another great coffee place in the same area in Sofia. Most times when I stop here in the mornings it’s quite busy, and that’s usually a good sign, right? It has quite a modern look and I believe they change the art at the wall sometimes as well. It actually does feel a little bit like having breakfast in an art gallery, with the art, the high ceiling and the huge windows.

In Altruist it’s possible to work with your laptop, but since it’s often quite busy I don’t really like sitting here with my laptop. But it is the perfect place if you fancy a coffee and something sweet. For the sweet tooths: they have a lot of delicious cakes!

Prices: most cakes are 4 to 10 leva (€2-5). A cappuccino is 4,60 leva (€2,30).

Address: Ekzarh Yosif Street 49

3. Typical Bulgarian: Mekitsa & Coffee

If you’re looking for a typical Bulgarian breakfast that is also vegetarian friendly you should score some mekitsi. Mekitsa is a fried flat bread that kinda looks like a flat doughnut (or for the Dutch readers: like an “oliebol”). You can use so many things as toppings, like blueberry jam, powdered sugar, yoghurt, chocolate, differents fruit like strawberry and banana, honey and even cheese. Most Bulgarians have good memories of eating mekitsi at their grandparents’ place for breakfast.

The best place to try this in the city center of Sofia is Mekitsa And Coffee, in Bulgarian Мекица и Кафе. The hotspot is quite small and it doesn’t really stand out in the streets of Sofia, so if you don’t know it you might just pass it without noticing it. Plus: the sign is in Bulgarian, so keep an eye on that. But definitely make a stop here to try it! They have many toppings, so there will always be a choice of your liking. The menu is both in Bulgarian and English.

Upstairs there are a few tables to sit down, but a lot of people have their mekitsi here as take away.

Price: 1 mekitsa is 4-5 leva (€2-2,5), depending on the toppings that you add to it. Also coffee has a decent price here: an espresso is 2 leva (€1) and a cappuccino is 3,60 leva (€1,80).

Address: Ulica Graf Ignatiev 28

Extra tip for a visit to Sofia: Balkan Bites

I discovered Supa Bar via Balkan Bites: a donation-based food tour in Sofia. It’s one of the things that I recommend people doing when they go to Sofia, because it’s fun and you’ll have a full belly afterwards. I have one the tour twice and the guides always seem enthusiastic to talk about Bulgaria and Bulgarian food. They also add some personal stories to it, so you’ll learn more about life in Bulgaria from a local as well. The tour is free, but it’s recommended to give a tip to your guide afterwards.

4. My favourite vegetarian hotspots in Sofia: Sun Moon

If one of your Bulgarian (meat loving) friends is excited about a vegetarian place, you know you’re in for a treat. Sun & Moon is a lovely vegetarian bakery, but they offer way more than that. It’s probably my favourite place to sit down for brunch/lunch in Sofia. Most of the menu is vegetarian, but they have some vegan options as well.

It’s possible to either sit inside (on different floors in the restaurant) or outside. The menu has some set dishes, but also has a daily menu that changes, so you can often try something new here – even if you visit the place on a regular base.

A big plus of this place is the friendly staff; unfortunately not a very common thing in restaurants in Bulgaria. But the people here are very warm and welcoming. Also the bread and cookies from the bakery are amazing, so definitely bring some home once you’re already full after your meal.

Price: soups are about 6 leva (€3), most main dishes are 14-20 leva (€7-10).

Address: Ulica 6-ti septemvri 39

5. Great vegan burgers & burritos: Edgy Veggy

There are not a lot of vegan hotspots in Sofia, so Edgy Veggy is a favourite for the vegans in town. It’s a small hotspots with just a few tables, but even if it’s just for take away this place is definitely worth it. They have delicious vegan burgers and burritos. One of my favourites is the tempeh burger!

Sweet tooths can have some delicious vegan cakes like Orea Cheesecake or a Snickers Shake.

Price: most burritos and burgers are about 15 leva (€7,5)

Address: Ulica William Gladstone 18B

6. Pay Per Size at vegetarian restaurant Satsanga

One of my favourite vegetarian hotspots in Sofia is Satsanga, not faw from the cathedral. I absolutely love the concept of this restaurant: you pay for the size of your portion. The price is based on the weight of your plate. It has a lot of Indian influences, so think of nice curry and spicy food.

The atmosphere in this place is also very nice and warm. I love the decoration in this place and the fact that you can sit downstairs to be more in the buzz and upstairs if you prefer to eat in a more quiet space.

The signs are only in Bulgarian, but you can ask the staff to explain what’s on the menu for the day. The menu is in buffet style, so you just check it out and they will fill your plate. At the end you go to the cashier and they put your plate on a scale to weight. I think most portions for adults are 500-600 grams, but you can have as much as you want (or go for a second round).

The restaurant is 100% vegetarian, but multiple meat eating friends were raving about this place after visiting as well.

Price: it’s about 3 leva (€1,5) per 100 grams, so 15-20 leva (€7,5-10) per meal

Address: Ulica Georgi Benkovski 8

7. Lots of soups: Supa Star

Bulgarians definitely love soup, but this restaurant brings the soup culture the next level. Supa Star has dozens of recipes of delicious soups and a lot of them are vegetarian. Every day they add a few of their soups to the daily menu, so it’s always a surprise what they will have that day.

A typical Bulgarian, vegetarian soup that you can try is tarator: a cold soup made with yoghurt, cucumber and dille. Delicious in the summer!

There are some tables upstairs to sit down, but most people come here for take away.

Price: 1 soup portion is about 6 leva (€3).

Address: Ulica Tsar Shishman 8 (there is a second location at Bulevard Dondukov 19 as well)
